Resting metabolic rate New

Your resting energy, measured, not guessed.

See the resting energy result printed on your RMR report, alongside its prediction, respiratory quotient and fuel mix where reported. It is a resting measurement, not a daily calorie intake target.

Sample data
Why measure it

Your measurement, next to the prediction.

Keep the measured result separate from a formula estimate. Your report provides context for a conversation with your clinician or dietitian, not a diagnosis or a prescription.

Measured energy expenditure

Your resting energy expenditure in kcal per day, from oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide production over a steady-state window.

Percent of predicted

Measured against the prediction printed on your report, which keeps the reference equation it was calculated with. Well above or below predicted is useful information in itself.

Respiratory quotient

RQ shows the mix of fuel you are burning at rest. Closer to 0.7 is fat-leaning, closer to 1.0 is carbohydrate-leaning.

Fuel use breakdown

The fat and carbohydrate split your report shows, with unusual values flagged and referred to your clinic rather than explained away.

Test variation

The variation reported across your test, so you can see how stable the measurement was.

Separate from DEXA estimates

A measured RMR never overwrites the formula estimate on a DEXA report. The two are labelled and kept apart.

The report

A measurement, then a plan you can check.

The RMR report shows your measured result, how steady the test was, and how it compares with what a formula would have predicted. It is a starting point for a conversation with your clinician or dietitian, not a prescription.

  • Metabolic table. Energy, RQ, VO2 and VCO2 with measured, predicted and variation columns.
  • Charts from your report. Measured versus predicted energy, RQ and fuel mix, drawn from the numbers printed on your PDF.
  • Baseline first. One test is a baseline. Comparison and trends appear once you have repeat tests.
  • Upload your own. Supported RMR reports can be uploaded yourself and are read on our systems without sending the PDF or its text to an outside AI service. They are marked as self-published, not clinic-approved.

Who it is for

  • Anyone whose fat loss has stalled despite "doing everything right"
  • People coming off a long diet who want to know if their metabolism has adapted
  • Athletes managing fuelling around training load
  • People discussing resting energy measurements with a clinician or dietitian

Your measured resting energy is not a daily intake target. Discuss any change to what you eat with your doctor or dietitian, particularly if you have a medical condition.

Preparing for your test

Follow your clinic's preparation instructions.

Ask the testing clinic how to prepare and whether the test is suitable for you. Its instructions take precedence over general information here.

Before the appointment

  • Confirm the clinic's fasting and exercise instructions
  • Ask about caffeine, nicotine and supplements
  • Discuss medicines and fasting safety with your clinician; do not stop prescribed treatment based on this website

On the day

  • Follow the clinic's arrival and rest instructions
  • Tell the operator about anything that could affect preparation
  • Confirm test method and appointment length directly with the clinic

Preparation guidance is general. Follow any specific instructions from the clinic performing your test.

Questions

About RMR testing.

Is this the same as the BMR on my DEXA report?

No. The DEXA value is a formula estimate. An RMR test measures your actual energy expenditure. The dashboard keeps the two separate and labels them clearly.

How should I interpret test quality?

The dashboard displays variation and test details where supplied by the report. Ask the testing clinic to explain whether the measurement met its quality criteria.

How often should I retest?

Agree an interval with your clinician or testing clinic based on your circumstances. The dashboard does not prescribe a retesting schedule.

Can I combine RMR with other tests?

Ask the clinic to plan the order and preparation if you want several tests in one visit. Do not assume the same food, fasting or exercise instructions apply to every test.

Know your number. Your actual number.

Ask for account access and bring a supported RMR report, or arrange testing directly with a clinic.
