DEXA body composition

The scan that tells you what you are made of.

A DEXA scan measures fat, lean tissue and bone across your whole body and by region, in about ten minutes. MyBodyLab turns the report into a record you can actually use: direction, rate and what to focus on next.

Front view body figure used for the regional composition map
Arms22.1% fat
Android29.4% fat
Gynoid33.8% fat
Legs17.6 kg lean

What DEXA measures

Numbers worth more than your weight.

Body fat percentage

Total fat as a share of body mass, set against published age and sex reference bands (Gallagher et al.). The headline number, but not the only one. If your age or sex is missing, the rating is withheld rather than guessed.

Lean mass and lean mass index

Lean tissue includes more than muscle. See the measurements printed on your report, with lean mass index expressed relative to height.

Fat mass index

Fat mass normalised to height, which separates "carrying more fat" from "being bigger" in a way BMI never could.

Visceral fat

The visceral fat estimate and units supplied on your report. Discuss its meaning and any change with the clinician interpreting your assessment.

Android to gynoid ratio

Where you store fat, trunk versus hips and thighs, with plain descriptive bands rather than a disease-risk claim.

Whole-body bone scores

The T and Z scores printed on your report, shown with a clear note that a whole-body scan is not a diagnostic bone scan and the values are not for diagnosis.

Regional composition

Fat and lean for arms, legs and trunk, left and right. Imbalances are visible on a body map, not buried in a table.

Estimated resting energy

A formula-based estimate shown for context and never graded as good or bad. It stays separate from a measured RMR if you do that test.

Goal progress

Set a body fat or lean mass goal and see how far you have moved from your starting scan, separately from the date you chose.

The report

Direction, rate, risk. Not a single score.

The DEXA report separates Overview, Regional and Bone views so nothing gets flattened into one number. Off-optimal signals stay visible, and every metric has an explainer for what it is and why it matters.

  • Compare any two scans. Side-by-side metrics shown as increased or decreased, plus a regional change view.
  • Per-scan detail. Open any historical scan as a full report, not just the latest.
  • Bone tab. Whole-body T and Z scores as printed, with a non-diagnostic note.
  • Download, book and share. Download the original PDF, book your next scan from the report, or share it. You can also remove a report from your dashboard.
Comparability

A trend is only real if the scans are comparable.

Equipment, software, positioning and preparation can affect comparability. Review the source reports and discuss a change of scanner with your clinic before treating it as a change in your body.

Keep the source report

Check scanner and facility details where the PDF provides them. An uploaded report is not certification of the scanner or clinic that produced it.

Context before comparison

A trend chart does not make results from different machines equivalent. MyBodyLab does not promise automatic cross-device normalisation.

Missing is not zero

If a measurement is not on your report it shows as Not reported. Cards, comparisons and rates never turn a gap into a zero or invent a change.

Preparing for your scan

A little preparation makes it count.

Before you arrive

  • Ask your clinic for its preparation instructions
  • Discuss any pregnancy possibility or relevant health circumstances
  • Ask how to keep repeat-test conditions consistent

On the day

  • Follow the clinic's clothing and metal-removal instructions
  • Tell the operator about relevant implants or recent procedures
  • Confirm appointment length with the clinic

Preparation guidance is general. Follow any specific instructions from the clinic performing your scan.

Questions

About DEXA.

How often should I scan?

Ask your clinic or clinician to recommend an interval for your goals and circumstances. The dashboard records tests; it does not prescribe how often to have them.

Is DEXA suitable for me?

The testing clinic must assess suitability and explain radiation exposure and precautions. Tell them if you are pregnant, might be pregnant or have other concerns before booking.

Can I upload scans from another clinic?

Yes, if the PDF format is supported. Check important values against the original and discuss equipment differences with your clinic before comparing results.

Why does the body map not colour my head?

Because DEXA regional analysis covers arms, trunk and legs. The head is measured in the whole-body total but is not a reported region, so the map stays honest to what the scan measures.

Your first DEXA, or your latest one.

Ask for account access and add a supported scan report, or arrange testing directly with a clinic.
